The first geostationary satellite. Launched in August 1964 and placed over the Pacific near the International Date Line. Relayed television coverage of the 1964 Tokyo Olympics to the United States. Built by Hughes Aircraft. Its predecessor Syncom 2 was the first geosynchronous satellite.
