About Giotto
The first European deep space mission. Flew within about 600 km of the nucleus of Halleys Comet in March 1986. Returned the first close images of a comet nucleus. Its dust shield protected it from high-speed particles. Later flew past comet Grigg-Skjellerup in 1992.
